technology majors

With the completion of the SBDM required courses, those student who wish to pursue technology courses may choose a technology major. Most of these courses are two year commitments and many work towards or require an industry recognized certification.

Information Technology - Computer Systems and Hardware Courses

A+ Certification
Students learn about computer hardware and operating systems. They build a computer lab and perform maintenance on school machines. If successful, students will attain the A+ certification by CompTIA.

Networking
In the second course students learn about Networking computers and prepare for the CompTIA Net+ and Server+ test. They learn the fundamentals of wiring and networking LANs.

Advanced Networking
This course continues the study of networking. Students learn about large networking hardware. This course will work towards Server + Certifications.

Cisco Academy
The convergence of the Internet and education create Internet-enabled learning - e-learning. Virtually all Internet traffic passes across Cisco technology. This course is a mixture of web and lecture based instruction, as well as hands on training with Cisco products.

Computer Repair /Help Desk
Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) Help Desk is an independent study program that allows a student to go beyond the typical class room computer class. The technology assistant will learn to repair and troubleshoot computers, load software, setup printers, assist in high school classrooms and computer labs, and will learn some networking techniques.

Computer mapping / GIS Software
This course teaches Geographic Information Services software. Students learn about computer mapping and database technology. They learn the software ARC View and prepare for GIS internships.

Advance Computer mapping / GIS Software
This course is a project oriented continuation of the Computer Mapping I. Students will complete projects determined by UL and JCPS and work on or toward community internships.

Programming Courses

Visual BASIC

This course is an introduction to object oriented programming in Microsoft Visual BASIC. The course emphasizes application design and programming. Special emphasis will be given to material needed for the Microsoft Certification exam.

Advanced Visual BASIC
This course is for the advanced programmer and deals with creation of real world applications. The course also prepares students for the Microsoft Certification exam in Visual BASIC.

C++
This course is the introduction to programming in C++. The course is designed to prepare the student for the Advanced Placement Exam in computer programming. Students should have completed or be enrolled in Algebra II. They should also enjoy the thrill and excitement, the beauty and majesty, the unbridled roller coaster ride that is software design.

Advanced C++
This course is for the advanced programmer and deals with creation of real world applications. Not for the faint of heart, this class is as close as you can get to the real thing without a lift pass.

General Technology Classes
Engineering Technology
This course is an introduction to technology issues in engineering. The course covers basic programming, problem solving, and other topics relevant to a pre- engineering curriculum.

Graphics Courses
Introduction to Computer Graphics
Designed as an introductory level class, this graphics class will be a broad overview of types of graphics and graphics programs, studying both print and web design. Small scale illustration and graphics projects will incorporate the most commonly used software.

Graphic Communication
This introductory level class deals with design and desktop publishing software and basic design and layout theory. Using PhotoShop 6.0 , PageMaker 6.5, and Corel Draw 9, students will create a variety of printed materials, including newsletters, administrative forms and print advertisement for a local small business.

Graphic Communication II
This class stresses real world projects, creative visual expression, and both independent and group work ethic while studying advance levels of expertise in desktop publishing, vector graphics and image editing software. There are three major projects: company logo and stationary, designing a CD cover/movie poster and designing Eastern's recruiting brochure to be printed and distributed through out the county.

Web Page Design

Students will apply technology skills to a full range of computer applications with emphasis on web page design. This class does the Eastern Web site and manages many other sites. The students will master the language of XHTML and programs such as Adobe PhotoShop, Flash, Microsoft Front Page and Dreamweaver.  Students will also learn CSS and Javascript.

Advanced Web Page Design
Students will apply technology skills to a full range of computer applications with emphasis on web page design. Focus will be placed upon Adobe PhotoShop, Flash, Microsoft Front Page and Dreamweaver. The class develops and maintains the school's web site. Focus is also placed on developing personal web sites and sites for businesses and non-profit organizations.

Yearbook I
Creation of a fully digital yearbook. Traditional art and digital art merge into one.

Yearbook II - Second year of yearbook.

Newspaper I
Desktop publishing, scanning, and journalism skills. Students will apply technology skills to a full range of computer applications and design skills in the creation of the Eastern Eagle Newspaper. The students will master programs such as Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe PageMaker.

Video
This is a two-year set of classes that focuses on the Broadcast Television Industry. It includes fundamentals of shooting, editing and producing video for TV. Also covered is an awareness of the various technology systems that are used in these processes. Students work in vocational awareness, interviewing and job skill development in all classes.

Advanced Video
This is the second year course which focuses on fundamentals of shooting, editing and producing video for the Television. Also covered is an awareness of the various computer systems that are used in these processes.

Business Courses
Introduction to Business Principles
This class introduces students to the world of business as well as prepares them for their economic roles of consumer, worker and citizen.

Computer Accounting I
An introduction to the concepts and procedures used in accounting for business activity. Income determination and accounting for assets, liabilities and ownership equity, and the preparation of financial statements for individuals, partnerships, and corporations. Automated accounting and spreadsheet programs will be incorporated. This class will be held in a computer lab.

Computer Accounting II
Requirements: Teacher recommendation and prerequisite - T3S1
An introduction to the financial accounting process from source transaction through completed financial statements, using a professional financial statement accounting computer program. This course will be held in a computer lab.

AP Economics
This course will cover topics such as supply and demand analysis, consumption and production choice, causes of unemployment and inflation, monetary and fiscal policies of the Federal Government, basic theory and economic analysis of prices, markets, production wages, interest, rent and profits. This course will culminate with the AP College Board Test.

Business and Personal Law
This is an introductory course that provides a solid foundation in understanding legal issues and familiarity with the topics of business.

Banking
Students will learn about the history of money, the Federal Reserve banking system and other money management basics. The students will then be trained as tellers to work in the school bank. As bank tellers, they open accounts, process transactions, sell loans, and plan and participate in promotions and incentive programs to increase sales and activity in their bank.

E-Commerce Business Analysis
Covers the important business concepts needed for sound web site development. Emphasis is an analysis and understanding of good site design rather than hands-on technical skills. Topics covered include applications of E-Commerce; the impact of the Internet on business; social, legal and ethical issues of E-commerce; exploring the conduct of an E-business; and website considerations.
